Huang Hsiao-yen (1965–2026), born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, was a contemporary abstract painter and curator. She lived in France from 1988 to 1997, earning her degree in painting from the Department of Art-Space at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Upon returning to Taiwan, she joined the faculty of the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts, where her expertise spanned oil painting, contemporary art history, mixed media, and art criticism. Huang’s works reflect a profound meditation on existence and the fleeting fragments of daily life, rendered with a poetic atmosphere that invites rich imaginative engagement. In her paintings, the counterpoint and rhythmic play of lines and symbols weave tangible dimensions of light and space across the two-dimensional plane.
Memory Is a Sketch of Life: Zaoqiao Township is an abstract acrylic on paper created by Huang Hsiao-yen in 2003. The composition is divided into upper and lower registers. In the upper half, a stark white cross erupts against a deep black background. In contrast, the lower half is entirely inverted—featuring a grid-like cross of white squares, window lattice motifs, and the word “Paradis” rendered upside down. This deliberate juxtaposition creates a striking tension between the inverted figurative imagery and the upright abstract space.
