Chen Shu-hwa (b. 1963) was born in Xihu, Changhua. She earned her degree from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and holds a Ph.D. in Western Art History from Université Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. Currently a professor at NTNU’s Department and Graduate lnstitute of Fine Arts, Chen previously served as a painting conservator at both the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, and the Palace of \/ersailles. Specializing in oil and lacquer painting (including the traditional Japanese maki-e technique), Chen’s practice is deeply informed by her rural upbringing, which fostered a keen sensitivity to the vibrant life force of the natural world. Across various media—whether egg tempera, oil, or lacquer—her work reflects her reverence and concern for nature. Her delicate brushwork conveys a humanistic sensibility and reveals spiritual beauty. In 2009, she was commissioned by the NMH to participate in the “Eight Celebrated Flowers of Taiwan” project.

Taiwan Lady’s Slipper Orchid is a 2009 egg tempera on canvas by Chen Shu-hwa, who has long focused her creative practice on Taiwan’s endemic flora. Rendered from a top-down perspective, the composition captures the species’ natural habitat on the damp, shaded forest floor. Executed on pure stretched linen using a mixed oil-and-tempera technique, the painting was developed through patient layering—beginning with dark black and gray undertones, followed by the delicate pale pink of the petals and the light green of the leaf veins. Through her intricate brushwork, Chen translates the wonder of her initial encounter with the orchid’s ecological grace. In Chinese, the species is also poetically called the “Fairy’s Slipper,” as its deep, pouch-like petal evokes a slipper left behind by a celestial maiden.
