Pan Yu (b. 1959) was born in Puli, Nantou, and graduated from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Shih Chien College of Home Economics. Her paintings are direct reflections of her philosophy of life. When everyday existence is constrained into a tight space, the resulting reactionary force can become a new energy that animates the entire work. Perhaps this embodies both the exhilaration of creation and an elusive, fleeting beauty. Beyond Eastern or Western distinctions, art acts as a regenerative creative force, and Pan’s painting is the very practice of this aesthetic spirit. In 1993, she was selected by the NMH to represent the institution at the 8th Asian International Art Exhibition, held at the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan.

Strangulation is an oil painting on canvas by Pan Yu, created in 1992. For many young girls, dolls are their most intimate childhood companions—serving as repositories for memories of growing up and anchors for emotional attachment. Using dolls as her visual subject, Pan anthropomorphizes her figures through deliberate arrangements, alternating between scenes of warm togetherness and feelings of isolation and melancholy. Stripped of human interaction, the dolls appear devoid of life, lingering as ornate yet hollow shells. Through this motif, Pan mirrors humanity’s deep yearning for connection and fear of estrangement, while unveiling the subtle, conflicted emotions of her own childhood.
