Juin Shieh (b. 1961) was born in Miaoli, Taiwan. She earned her BFA from National Taiwan Normal University, an MFA from Pratt lnstitute, and a Doctor of Arts (D.A.) from New York University’s School of Education. She is currently a professor in the Department of Arts and Design at National Tsing Hua University. Shieh’s creative practice stems from personal experience, weaving together critical reflection, dialectical inquiry, and deep engagement with contemporary issues. Drawing nourishment from her intersecting roles as daughter, wife, mother, scholar, and artist, she constructs layered, interwoven imagery rich with intertextual references. Her work radiates the vital force of female existence while offering fresh, profound perspectives on body and gender—positioning her as a prominent figure among Taiwan’s mid-career women artists.
Archetype is a 2000 work on paper by Shieh Hong-juin, executed in acrylic and charcoal pencil. In the composition, black-contoured hands intertwine with claw-like forms echoing insect limbs, while a bold streak of dripping red sweeps vertically through the space. Here, the tender vulnerability of an infant collides with the sharp, armored texture of a beetle, giving form to a profound dynamic of tension and contradiction within the structures of life.
