Forge is a charcoal work on paper created by Maggie Hsun-Wei Hsu in 1990. Heavy charcoal strokes interweave with bold black circles, creating an outward dynamic tension across the picture plane. The dense charcoal marks are in fact traces left after repeated erasure has created delicate white lines, reflecting the “forging’ of the work’s female imagery—distilling the essential by stripping away the redundant. The artist seeks to frame gender awareness in terms of coexistence and equality rather than opposition. Her broader circumstances led her to recognize the importance of preserving her independence and the freedom to remain detached. Through her art, she reflects, explores, searches, and constructs visions beyond boundaries..
