Lin Hsueh-ching (b. 1952) was born in New Taipei City, Taiwan. She graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and earned her master’s degree in Art from the University of Tsukuba in Japan. A founding member of the Evergreen Graphic Art Association and a Fellow of the Taiwan Academy of Fine Arts, she has dedicated her career to advancing modern Taiwanese printmaking. Lin previously served as a professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Taipei. Proficient across diverse printmaking media, she stands out as one of Taiwan’s prominent female printmakers and a pioneer in integrating computer-assisted techniques into printmaking education. Her practice synthesizes Eastern and Western philosophical frameworks with contemporary sensibilities, exploring dualities such as yin and yang, presence and absence, vitality, and local identity, while also addressing emerging feminist consciousness and Taiwanese social issues. In 2016, she was featured in the NMH exhibition “Legacy of the Great River: 42nd Anniversary Exhibition of the Evergreen Graphic Art Association.”
Day and Night I is a color lithograph on paper created by Lin Hsueh-ching in 1998. Centered on the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, the work employs surrealist juxtaposition to contrast day and night. In the daytime scene, the building merges with the ocean as a salmon leaps from the water, symbolizing homecoming and the search for identity. At night, Double Tenth light installations illuminate the structure, while two ominous storm clouds approach Taiwan—allegorizing the social pressures exerted by political factions, corporate conglomerates, and ideological polarizations. Keenly capturing the tense atmosphere ahead of Taiwan’s 2000 presidential election, the work acquired an almost prescient dimension following the country’s historic first peaceful transfer of power, standing today as a landmark work of political commentary. Lin integrated photography, digital drawing, and meteorological data through computer assistance, completing the composition via four-color separation and offset lithography from presensitized (PS) plates.
