林燕
Swallow Y. Lin
Swallow Y. Lin (b. 1946) was born in Huangyan, Zhejiang. After losing her hearing to meningitis at age six, she was home-schooled by her mother, who taught her literacy and nurtured her innate artistic talent. Lin studied painting under masters Ma Pai-shui and Chang Yi-hsiung before turning to modern printmaking under the guidance of Wu Hao. In 1967, she joined the Ton Fan Art Group and later the Modern Print Society, participating extensively in contemporary printmaking exhibitions across Taiwan and internationally. Dense, layered lineation forms the core of her visual vocabulary. Her early practice featured fluid, semi-abstract linework that captured human expressions and organic movement; her later period integrated lndigenous American totemic motifs and Peking opera iconography, setting bold black lines against striking red backdrops to yield a pure, elemental, and powerful aesthetic. In 1962, Lin participated in the “Preview of Modern Paintings for Exhibition in the United States (the 6th Fifth Moon Exhibition)” organized by the NMH. In 1973, she was featured in NMH’s “Exhibition of Modern Art of the Republic of China” in Paris.
Mother and Daughter,母與女。林燕Swallow Y. Lin。1970。
Mother and Daughter is a two-block color woodcut created by Swallow Y. Lin in 1970. Printed in black and red, the work depicts a tender scene of a mother embracing her daughter. The mother wears a decorative headpiece, while the daughter’s hair is bound in traditional topknots, both radiating joyful expressions. Vivid red color blocks frame the central figures, which are constructed from intricate, spiraling linear patterns. The bold contrast enlivens the imagery, establishing a dynamic dialogue between solid geometric planes and dense, flowing lines—infusing the composition with playful geometry and a distinct Eastern sensibility.
