Liang Dan-fong (1935-2021), a native of Shunde, Guangdong, was a renowned watercolor artist and essayist, and the daughter of the celebrated painter Liang Ting-ming. Grounded in direct observation, her watercolor practice skillfully integrated the negative space (liubai) and calligraphic inscriptions (kuanti) of traditional ink painting, giving rise to an elegant and delicate personal style. Beginning in 1955, Liang embarked on global journeys across Europe, the Americas, and Asia to write and paint. She was a pioneer among Taiwanese female artists in pairing independent solo travel with plein-air sketching, laying the foundations for Taiwan’s travel literature genre. Her major accolades include the Ministry of Education’s Cultural Medal (1976), the Golden Jue Award from the Art Society of the Republic of China (1982), and the National Award for Arts (1991). Liang taught in the Department of Fine Arts at the National Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) and Chinese Culture University. In 1975, she was invited by the NMH to participate in the “Exhibition of 20th-Century Chinese Masters” in the Netherlands, where she performed live painting demonstrations. In 1982, NMH hosted the “Special Exhibition of Liang Dan-fong’s Grand Canyon Sketches,” during which Vice President Hsieh Tung-min presented her with the museum’s Gold Medal.

Sketching in Scotland is a watercolor on paper painting created by Liang Dan-fong in 1978. Painted “en plein air,” the work depicts the magnificent landscape of the Scottish Highlands. The artist employs subtle tonal variations to build rich layers and dramatic spatial depth. The dense woodland in the foreground, contrasted against distant high peaks, deep valleys, and dramatic clouds, frames a prominent highland summit—highlighting its rugged, defiant, and imposing grandeur.
