Shan Shu-tze (1922-2012) was born in Wuhu, Anhui. She graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Central University in Nanjing and relocated to Taiwan after World War II. She and her husband, the renowned painter Wu Cheng-yen, mutually inspired and guided each other throughout their lifelong artistic careers. Her ink paintings consist primarily of landscapes. Emulating the ethos of master Xu Bei-hong by taking nature as her teacher, she remained deeply committed to realist painting and direct plein-air sketching during her travels. Her versatile explorations of the natural world enriched her ink still lifes, landscapes, and figure studies, reflecting a profound passion for art and a tender affection for her subjects. In 1989, she was invited to participate in the “Commemorative Exhibition of Touliao Sketches” organized by the NMH. In 1991, the museum presented the joint retrospective “Exhibition of Paintings by Wu Cheng-yen and Shan Shu-tze.”

Sketch at Touliao is an oil painting on canvas by Shan Shu-tze, created in 1989. It depicts a secluded, winding woodland path looking out toward the Touliao Guesthouse (now the Daxi Mausoleum) in the distance. The courtyard’s plum trees, Chinese Junipers, and lush foliage are rendered with delicate brushwork and harmonious color tones. The painting’s classical realism evokes an atmosphere of understated elegance and solemnity. Originally a modest siheyuan (traditional courtyard compound) built to house Presidential Office archives, the Touliao Guesthouse became the temporary resting place of President Chiang Ching-kuo following his passing in 1988. Subsequently renamed the Daxi Mausoleum, the site was opened to the public as a place of remembrance and respect.
