At the age of fifty, she gained admission to the Graduate lnstitute of Arts at Chinese Culture University, where she studied under Au Ho-nien, a Lingnan School painter based in Taiwan. Her paintings encompass diverse subjects, distinguished by deft touches and washes of ink and a fresh, refined palette. In 1984, she participated in the “Exhibition of Contemporary Ink Painting” held in the Dominican Republic.
Two Dogs in an Autumn Garden is an ink and color on paper painting by Chao Song-yun in 1980. Combining the meticulous detail of gongbi (fine-line) painting with the expressive freedom of xieyi (freehand) brushwork, the work features delicate brushwork and a distinctive composition to vividly depict two puppies in a garden—one brown, the other black-and-white—with fluffy coats and endearing gazes. Lush flora and clusters of red persimmons evoke the richness of autumn, with a single overripe fruit fallen to the ground. Near the bottom, the brown puppy fixes its gaze on a grasshopper resting on a blade of grass, infusing the peaceful setting with a moment of playful charm.
