Anticipation is an oil painting on canvas by Hsi Mu-ren, created in 1985. Dominated by deep blue hues, the upper-right composition depicts a mother and son from behind; the mother rests her left hand gently on the boy’s shoulder as she gazes into the distance, conveying a quiet longing for a loved one’s return. In stark contrast, the lower-left scene—rendered in rich, warm browns—shows the mother and child in a close embrace, her eyes brimming with tears as the boy holds a small white flower. The flower symbolizes life’s gentle, fleeting passage: an ending that seeds a new beginning, embodying endless hope and everlasting love (everlasting remembrance). By juxtaposing front and rear perspectives alongside cool and warm palettes across a diagonal axis, the composition highlights the emotional tension between reality and longing, capturing the artist’s profound reflections on life, memory, and human connection.
