袁旃（b.1941），生於四川重慶，1949年隨父親袁守謙移居臺灣。畢業於臺灣省立師範大學藝術系（今國立臺灣師範大學美術學系），曾受溥心畬、黃君璧、金勤伯及林玉山等多位水墨畫大師指導，亦與廖繼春、陳慧坤等教授學習西畫技法。獲比利時魯汶大學考古美術史系碩士，完成比利時皇家文物維護學院博士先修班課程。返臺後任職於國立故宮博物院器物處研究員、科技室主任，退休後全心投入創作。1995年應本館之邀舉辦「袁旃93–95」個展，2020年受法國龐畢度中心之邀舉辦個展。
Yuan Jai (b. 1941) was born in Chongqing, Sichuan, and relocated to Taiwan with her father, Yuan Shou-chien, in 1949. She graduated from the Department of Art at Taiwan Provincial Normal University (now National Taiwan Normal University), where she studied traditional ink painting under masters such as Pu Hsin-yu, Huang Chun-pi, Jin Chin-bo, and Lin Yu-shan, while also learning Western painting techniques from professors Liao Chi-chun and Chen Huei-kuen. She earned a master’s degree in Archaeology and Art History from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and completed predoctoral studies at the Royal lnstitute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels. Upon returning to Taiwan, Yuan joined the National Palace Museum, serving as a research fellow in the Department of Antiquities and later as Director of the Conservation Science Department. Following her retirement, she devoted herself entirely to artistic creation. In 1995, she was invited by the NMH to hold the solo exhibition “Yuan Jai 1993-1995.” In 2020, she achieved major international acclaim with a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
《寶島》，為袁旃1997年水墨設色紙本作品。畫面以象徵式的元素共構而成，強化作者的創作觀想。畫面上半部主要由大小不一的各色三角形構成，象徵山勢起伏綿延；畫面主體是怪奇的大木構，加諸依稀可辨的田園、山巒、湖海種種象徵圖形，穿插彩色點與色塊，凸顯出主題「寶島」的多樣性。款、丁丑。袁旃。印：袁旃。
Formosa is an ink and color on paper painting by Yuan Jai in 1997. Built upon symbolic elements, the composition reflects the artist’s inventive conceptual vision. The upper portion features geometric triangles of varying sizes and colors, evoking a continuous, undulating mountain range. At the center, a monumental and fantastical wooden framework dominates the canvas, surrounded by subtle, suggestive motifs of fields, mountains, lakes, and seas. Interspersed with vibrant dots and planes of color, these layered symbols celebrate the rich diversity of Taiwan.
