Hung Jui-hsia (b. 1950) was born in Gangshan, Kaohsiung. She graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the National Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). In 1989, she served as a teaching assistant to the master painter Au Ho-nien, studying under his guidance. Her artistic practice integrates traditional ink painting with Western techniques, creating vivid forms with a strong sense of volume and richly layered color choices. Equally adept at meticulous gongbi (fine-line) and expressive xieyi (freehand) styles, she explores subjects ranging from flowers and birds to wild beasts and Buddhist figures, all of which showcase her exceptional draftsmanship. In 1999, she was invited by the NMH to participate in the “Exhibition of One Hundred Masters Celebrating the Centenary of Senior Advisor Chen Li-fu.” In recent years, she has experimented with eco-friendly mediums, applying dolomite plaster coatings onto diatomaceous earth panels.
Maodie (Longevity) is an ink and color on paper painting by Hung Jui-hsia in 1999. Rendered without a background, the work plays on the homophones for “cat” (mao) and “butterfly” (die), which together evoke maodie—a term denoting advanced octogenarian age—to signify a blessing for long life. The pair of butterflies is painted using soft washes complemented by delicate touches of accent color. For the cat, fine line work is meticulously layered over washed tones, creating natural coloration and a striking sense of three-dimensional volume. Its agile posture and endearing expression bring the subject vividly to life.
