Lin Shu-nu (b. 1955), courtesy name Xiang-yin, is a native of Tainan, Taiwan. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Chinese Culture University and later completed an in-service master’s degree in the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University. In her gongbi (fine-line) paintings, she expertly employs fine outline techniques to delineate natural forms with clarity and precision, often composing complex layouts directly onto the canvas with a fine brush without preliminary sketches. Her artistic style emphasizes spatial depth and diffused, hazy imagery, evoking quiet philosophical contemplations on life. Lin has served as president of the Chinese Fine Brushwork Painting Association and as an executive board member of the Seal Engraving Society of the Republic of China. In 1999, she was awarded the prestigious Sun Yat-sen Literary and Art Award. Her husband, Chen Hung-mien, is a renowned calligrapher and seal engraver; together, the couple co-founded the Yinzheng Xiaoji (now the Taiwan Seal Society) and have actively promoted the art of seal carving for over four decades.

Temptation and Hope is an ink and color on paper painting by Lin Shu-nu in 1999. Rendered in the meticulous “gongbi (fine-line)” technique, it depicts hanging carrots, chili peppers, ears of corn, and an oil lamp. A long-eared rabbit tilts its head, gazing upward at the food suspended high above. Luminous washes of warm color suggest a dreamlike, illusory space illuminated by the lamp, evoking the subtle longings embedded within life’s varied journeys, where rich imagery leaves a lingering resonance of unfulfilled desire.
