Cheng Huey-hsiang (b. 1947) was born in Tainan, Taiwan. Introduced to calligraphy by her father at an early age, she developed a lifelong passion for brush and ink. She graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, where her rigorous academic training gave her a solid foundation in Western painting. Seamlessly blending Eastern and Western techniques, her style is spontaneous and expressive while maintaining a distinctive structural balance. Her paintings resonate with a natural, intimate warmth and vibrant vitality. In 1987, she was invited to participate in the exhibition Daylilies: The Chinese Flower of Motherhood, organized by the NMH.

Gentle Reminders is an ink and color on paper painting by Cheng Huey-hsiang in 1987. The work depicts a mother hen leading her chicks to forage and rest among daylilies at the foot of a craggy rock face. Rendered with rustic simplicity and a restrained application of color using the “boneless” (mogu) technique, seven chicks roam and play under their mother’s attentive gaze. Nestled beside the blooming daylilies, the scene radiates warmth and contentment, with both the hen and the flowers symbolizing the enduring radiance of maternal love.
