Tong Yang-tze (b. 1942) was born in Shanghai, with family roots in Yin County, Zhejiang. She moved to Taipei, Taiwan, with her parents at the age often. She began practicing calligraphy in childhood by copying ancient stele inscriptions and calligraphic models. She graduated from the Department of Arts at Taiwan Provincial Normal University (now the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University), and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts. Drawing on Western painting theory, Tong uses calligraphic lines as the basis of her art, bringing new meaning to the art of writing through both its visual form and textual content. She has exhibited widely in Taiwan and abroad and explored collaborations across dance, traditional theater, design, architecture, and fashion. Her awards include a gold prize at the Sino-Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition and a cover design award at a creative design exhibition in the United States. The National Museum of History invited her to participate in the “Five Phoenixes Calligraphy Exhibition” in 1973 and presented solo exhibitions of her work in 1978 and 2000.
Calligraphy in Running-Cursive Script is a calligraphic work created by Tong Yang-tze in 1973. Its text is drawn from Crossing the Sea, a poem by the Ming-dynasty thinker Wang Yang-ming. The poem suggests that hardships and dangers, like clouds drifting across the sky, should not linger in the mind. Reflecting quietly on life’s rising and falling waves in the depths of night, the poet resolves to face adversity, sustained by the righteous spirit of heaven and earth. lmbued with a Zen sensibility, the poem conveys his equanimity toward worldly honor and disgrace. Bold variations in character size, the spacing and grouping of the text, and ink tones give the work a powerful sense of movement. Vigorous, unrestrained brushwork runs throughout, creating a distinctive personal style.
