Horizontal Calligraphy in Running Script is a calligraphic work created by Chang Chien-ying in 1984. It presents lines selected by Tao Yuan-ming from Gu Kai-zhi’s Shenqing: “Spring waters fill the marshes all around; Summer clouds form wondrous peaks. The autumn moon casts its radiant light; On winter ridges, pines stand proud in the cold.” This celebrated short poem captures the distinctive beauty of the four seasons. Chang’s running script flows gracefully, while retaining a balanced, dignified structure. Generous spacing between the characters and columns lends the composition an open, expansive quality.
