Wang Shou-xuan (1924-2024), art name Yizhen Nüshi, was born in Harbin, with ancestral roots in Shenyang, Liaoning. Trained in traditional ink painting from an early age, she demonstrated exceptional talent and held her first public exhibition at just nine years old. After World War II, she relocated to Taiwan, where she studied landscape painting under master Chang Ku-nien. Her oeuvre encompasses a remarkably versatile range of styles—from meticulously rendered, lifelike portraits and bird-and-flower paintings executed with economical freehand brushwork, to landscapes that honor tradition without being bound by it, and bold, spontaneous works in the da xieyi (broad freehand) style. In 1981, Wang founded the Yifeng Studio in Taipei, uniting female artists dedicated to painting and calligraphy. The studio later expanded into the Chinese Yifeng Painting and Calligraphy Society, which was then Taiwan’s only women’s art organization devoted to these disciplines. In 1965, she participated in NMH’s “Exhibition of Ink Painting by Contemporary Masters.” NMH held solo exhibitions of Wang’s work in 1971 and 1997.

Landscape is an ink and color on paper painting by Wang Shou-xuan. Layered mountains rise amid swirling clouds and mist, creating a landscape of imposing grandeur. In the foreground, jagged rocks, old pines, and varied trees partially frame buildings nestled within the woods, while torrents of mountain streams plunge downward. On a bridge, three scholars pause to watch the waterfall and listen to the rushing water, as a traveler with a shoulder pole journeys along a winding path. Towering mountains dominate the background, their summits crowned with dense woods and clustered rock formations rendered in the fantou (“alum-head”) technique. Ink washes subtly contrast against the light, imparting a palpable sense of volume and movement to the drifting clouds and mist. Rich in detail and composition, the work pairs meticulous, disciplined brushwork with soft, elegant washes of color.
