Wen Bi-ying (1913-1990), a native of Fuzhou, Fujian, grew up in a family steeped in art. With a grandfather who was an art collector and parents who were passionate about painting and calligraphy, she developed her artistic inclinations from early childhood. She graduated from Huanan Girls’ Senior High School in Fujian. In 1949, she traveled to Taiwan to visit relatives and settled there following sudden changes in the political situation. She studied under the master Pu Hsin-yu, who bestowed upon her the name Wen-chi. As one of the most outstanding female disciples of his Hanyu Tang (Cold Jade Hall) studio, her painting style closely echoes her master’s trademark understated elegance, refined clarity, and quiet grace. During the 1960s, Wen held numerous solo exhibitions in Taipei, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Malaysia, and her work earned an Award of Excellence at the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition (a predecessor of today’s National Art Exhibition R.O.C.). In 1965, she participated in NMH’s “Exhibition of Ink Painting by Contemporary Masters.” In 1970, Wen co-founded the Shixiu (Ten Beauties) Painting Society alongside Tan Shu, Wang Chun-yi, Huang Kuo-ying, Hu Pei-chiang, Mei Hsiao-ying, Tien Man-shih, Wen Shu-ching, Liang Dan-fong, and Lo Fong. She studied under renowned masters, joined painting societies, and participated in group exhibitions.

Pavilions in the Mountains of the Immortals is an ink and color on paper painting by Wen Bi-ying. The work depicts an autumn landscape of mountains, streams, and pavilions, enlivened by cascading waterfalls and flowing springs. In front of the trees in the lush foreground valley, a scholar and a young attendant carrying a guqin (zither) turn back to gaze upward at the vista above. In the middle distance, dwellings nestle beside a waterfall that resembles a ribbon of white silk, where another scholar leans against a railing to admire the view. Higher and farther away, lofty pavilions rise among the peaks, while the most distant mountains recede into drifting clouds, their contours dissolving into the ethereal haze.
