Visiting a Friend by a Pine-Lined Stream is an ink and color on paper painting by Xu Ying in 1961. Tall, dense pines dominate the foreground, complemented by slopes contoured with short hemp-fiber texture strokes. A scholar carrying a walking stick crosses a bridge with a young attendant to visit a friend, who waits within a secluded retreat nestled among the trees. In the distance, overlapping mountain ranges are defined by long hemp-fiber texture strokes, through which a cascading waterfall descends like a ribbon of white silk amid drifting clouds and mis.
