Sheng Yuan-fang (1916-unknown), a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, learned from senior masters of the renowned Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society in her youth, establishing a solid foundation in ink landscape painting. She attended Hangchow Christian College (Zhijiang University) in Hangzhou. After World War II, Sheng relocated to Taiwan and studied landscape painting under Huang Chun-pi, acquiring her master’s refined, succinct brushwork. She subsequently broadened her artistic scope under Chang Ku-nien and Hu Ke-min, becoming equally accomplished in bird-and-flower subjects. In 1974, she participated in NMH’s “Worldwide Touring Exhibition of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy.” In 1981, Sheng was awarded the Golden Jue Award by the Art Society of China. Throughout her career, she held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions both domestically and internationally.
Clouds on Yushan is an ink and color on paper painting by Sheng Yuan-fang. It depicts a sea of clouds over Taiwan’s Yushan (Mount Jade) at dawn. Three tall alpine trees stand upright in the foreground, while a thick sea of clouds envelops the surrounding peaks. In the distance, soft, pale washes subtly contrast against the light to impart a sense of volume and density to the mountain haze. Ethereal clouds stretch across overlapping mountain ridges, creating a fluid interplay between solid form and void. The work echoes the semi-realistic “white cloud” landscapes of her master, Huang Chun-pi, whose brushwork captures the living vitality and transformations of nature.
