Wu Yung-hsiang (1913-1970), courtesy name Ci-sheng, was born into a prominent family in Minhou, Fujian Province. In her early years, she studied under Chen Shao-mei before enrolling in the Ink Painting Division at the National Beiping Academy of Art, training under masters such as Qi Baishi and Pu Hsin-yu. After graduating, she pursued advanced research at the lnstitute of Ink Painting within the Antiquities Exhibition Office. She later married her academy classmate, Chen Jiuan-fu. Following their relocation to Taiwan, the couple founded the Oubo Studio to mentor emerging artists. Wu was a highly regarded disciple of Pu Hsin-yu. Her landscapes reflect the influence of the Northern School, while her flower-and-bird paintings draw on the “mogu (boneless)” style of Yun Shou-ping, producing an aesthetic of elegance and luminosity. She also served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Art at Taiwan Provincial Teachers College (now the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University). In 1968, she was invited to participate in NMH’s “Exhibition of Ink Painting” in Tehran, Iran. In 1971, NMH presented the “Posthumous Exhibition of Wu Yung-hsiang,” featuring opening remarks by George K. C. Yeh and a ribbon-cutting by Ma Shou-hua.

Emerging from the Gorge is an ink and color on paper painting by Wu Yung-hsiang, created in 1966. Rendered in the meticulous “gongbi (fine-line)” technique, the composition depicts towering, sheer cliffs rising dramatically on either side of a gorge. As the river curves around a sharp bend, the narrow passage opens into a vast, expansive vista. Fine brushwork captures the churning rapids below, where boatmen on two vessels maneuver long poles with urgent precision, capturing the breathtaking tension of navigating the hazardous passage.
