Sun To-ze (1913-1975) was a native of Shou County, Anhui Province. In 1931, she was admitted to the Department of Art at Central University in Nanjing, where she studied under Xu Bei-hong. During her studies, she specialized in Western painting while also experimenting with ink painting, seeking an approach that used Western techniques to enrich Chinese traditions. After relocating to Taiwan in 1949, she joined the faculty of Taiwan Provincial Teachers College (now National Taiwan Normal University). In 1963, at the invitation of Chinese Culture College (now Chinese Culture University) founder Chang Chi-yun, she established its Fine Arts Department and was appointed professor and department chair. Accomplished in both Chinese and Western painting, Sun led the Fifth Moon Group in exhibiting in the United States, contributing to Taiwan’s first wave of modern art. She participated in numerous NMH exhibitions in Taiwan and overseas, including the 1962 “Preview of Modern Paintings for Exhibition in the United States” (the 6th Fifth Moon Exhibition) and the 1965 “Exhibition of Ink Paintings by Contemporary Masters.” In 1968, she was invited to travel to Tehran, Iran, for NMH’s “Exhibition of Ink Painting.” In 2013, NMH invited Professor Lee Chi-ming, Sun’s granddaughter, to curate the “Sun To-ze Centennial Memorial Exhibition.”

Contemplation is an ink on paper painting by Sun To-ze, created in 1965, rendered in the fine-line “baimiao (plain outline)” technique. The work depicts a woman wearing her hair in a feitian ji bun, with the tied ends falling over her shoulders. With her right arm resting on a stack of book cases, she supports her slightly tilted head with her hand, her gaze absorbed in thought. Her pose resembles that of a pensive bodhisattva in a half-lotus position in Buddhist sculpture.
