Chang Lee Te-ho (1893-1972), born Lee Te-ho, adopted the courtesy name Lianyu along with the literary sobriquets Lady Scholar of Luoshan, Master of Linlang Mountain Pavilion, Master of Tijin Pavilion, Master of Yi Garden, Danting, and Lady Scholar of Wuluan. She was born into a prominent family in Xiluo, Yunlin. Following her graduation from the Taiwan Governor-General’s National Language School in Taipei (a predecessor of today’s National Taipei University of Education and University of Taipei) in 1910, she taught at public schools in Douliu and Xiluo. In 1916, she married physician Chang Chin-tsan, adding his surname to her own to become Chang Lee Te-ho, and settled in Chiayi. She excelled in seven arts—poetry, lyric verse, calligraphy, painting, instrumental music, board games, and silk embroidery—and was renowned as a woman of exceptional talent in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. A versatile artist, Chang earned multiple selections to the official Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition (Taiten) and the Governor-General’s Art Exhibition (Futen), establishing her as one of the few female artists of her era to win official recognition. Spanning the Japanese colonial period into the postwar era, she was an important female figure in traditional Taiwanese literati arts and a champion of cultural life.

Everlasting Spring and Long Life is an ink and color on paper painting by Chang Lee Te-ho in 1934. Behind a craggy rock in the foreground, three vibrant peonies are rendered in the “mogu (boneless)” technique, their blossoms framed by lush green leaves. The gnarled branches of an ancient pine extend into the composition from beyond the frame, anchoring a pair of light-vented bulbuls perched side by side. One bird raises its head in song while the other lowers its head in response, reflecting a skillfully balanced composition and a refined color palette.
