Chen Chin (1907-1998) was born in Xiangshan, Hsinchu. While studying at Taipei Third Girls’ High School (now Taipei Municipal Zhong Shan Girls High School), her artistic potential was recognized and encouraged by her art teacher, Gobara Koto. In 1925, she was admitted to the Tokyo Women’s School of Fine Arts (now Joshibi University of Art and Design), becoming the first Taiwanese woman to pursue formal training in painting in Japan. In 1927, her paintings Attitude, Poppies, and Morning were selected for the inaugural Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition (Taiten). Together with Lin Yu-shan and Kuo Hsueh-hu, she earned fame as one of the “Three Youths of the Taiten.” In 1934, her painting Ensemble was accepted into the lmperial Art Exhibition (Teiten), making her the first Taiwanese painter to receive this honor. She was also selected as the only Taiwanese femalejuror in the Taiten’s Eastern painting division. She was among Taiwan’s first generation of professional female painters. Following her participation in the 1965 “Exhibition of Ink Paintings by Contemporary Masters,” NMH featured her work in several major exhibitions, including the “Joint Exhibition of Chen Chin, Lin Yu-shan, and Chen Huei-kuen” (1989), “Chen Chin: A Retrospective at Ninety” (1996), “Pondering at Leisure: The Beauty of Chen Chin’s Ladies” (2003), and “Modern Looks: Special Exhibition of Chen Chin” (2015). In 1996, she received the National Cultural Award. The following year, she donated the prize money and her savings to establish the Chen Chin Arts & Culture Award (now the Chen Chin Award) at NMH, nurturing emerging artists and supporting the continuation and development of gouache painting.

Grapes is a gouache on silk painting by Chen Chin, created in 1965. A grapevine sweeps diagonally across the composition with abundant foliage. Chen first rendered the leaves using the mogu (boneless) technique, applying washes of varying intensity to establish subtle, overlapping layers before delineating the fine leaf veins. Bountiful clusters of grapes hang heavy from the vine, outlined and filled with delicate color washes, with light and shadow giving the fruit volume and a luminous, translucent quality.
