Zeng Qi (1922-2015), courtesy name Wenzhen, was a native of Minhou, Fujian. She graduated from the Fujian Provincial lnstitute of Teacher Training and Practical Arts. As an initiated disciple of Pu Hsin-yu, she was deeply favored by her master, who personally instructed her in the Chinese classics and the fundamentals of calligraphy. Zeng excelled in landscapes, bird-and-flower paintings, and figure subjects, particularly depictions of elegant women. Her style closely echoes that of Pu Hsin-yu, combining meticulous execution and refined grace with classically elegant color washes, earning her acclaim as one of the most prominent disciples of his Hanyu Tang (Cold Jade Hall) studio. Professionally, Zeng served as an editor and reviewer for the National Assembly of the Republic of China. In 1968, she participated in NMH’s “Exhibition of Ink Painting” in Tehran, Iran. Lady is an ink and color on paper painting by Zeng Qi in 1968. The woman wears her hair in the chuihuan fenshao style (a dual-looped bun with trailing tresses), a traditional coiffure associated with unmarried women. A phoenix hairpin adorns her hair, while slender eyebrows and soft, narrow eyes endow her face with a gentle, graceful expression. She is attired in a traditional ruqun (jacket-and-skirt ensemble) paired with a draped silk shawl, featuring intricately decorated borders. Meticulous brushwork and subdued, classically elegant colors define the painting.
