Wu Xing-fen (1853-1930), born Wu Shujuan, also styled herself Xing-fen Laoren and signed her works Xing-fen Nüshi. She was a native of She County, Anhui Province. In her youth, she lived in Shanghai with her father, Wu Hongxun, selling paintings and learning to paint. Well-versed in traditional ink painting, she specialized in flower-and-bird motifs, landscapes, and figure paintings of women. Later inspired by the New Culture ideas of the May Fourth Movement, Wu joined professional Shanghai art societies, advocating for artistic reform and exchanging ideas with her fellow painters. She used her art to express inner reflection, respond to social realities, and inspire the public. In 1910, her work was presented at an exhibition in Italy. In 1925, she was appointed a professor in the specialized painting department at Shanghai Chengdong Girls’ School alongside Wu Changshuo and Wang Yiting. She was one of modern Shanghai’s leading female painters.

Traveling at Dawn on the Shu Plank Road is an ink and color on paper painting by Wu Xing-fen. The artwork depicts the historic Shu plank road, carved directly into sheer cliffs and suspended on wooden beams as it winds through towering precipices. A waterfall plunges from the heights, and a torrent rushes through the deep valley below, while small dwellings nestle in the woods and lush vegetation fills the foreground. Along the trail, travelers ride mules uphill, stop to converse and ask questions, and climb under heavy loads, vividly capturing the perilous terrain of the Shu Road.
