Yuan Chu-sheng (1912-1999) was a native of Tiantai, Zhejiang Province. In 1932, she enrolled at the Xinhua College of Fine Arts in Shanghai, studying oil painting under Chen Cheng-po. She traveled to Japan in 1934 to study Western art at the University of Tokyo, followed by advanced training in oil painting at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she formed a close connection with Pan Yu-lin. She subsequently taught Western painting as a lecturer at Chongqing College of Art and Chongqing Normal College. Relocating to Taiwan in 1949, Yuan served as associate professor and professor in the Fine Arts Department at Taiwan Provincial Teachers College (now the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University), while also serving on the jury for the oil painting section of the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition. Dedicated to supporting emerging talent, she founded the Taipei Women Painters Association (now the Taipei Women’s Western Painting Association) in 1984. In 2002, NMH honored her legacy with the “Yuan Chu-sheng Memorial Exhibition of Oil Paintings.”
Nude VII (Seated Sideways) is an oil painting on canvas by Yuan Chu-sheng, created in 1979. Using deft and assured short brushstrokes, Yuan depicts a nude woman seated at ease within an unadorned landscape, conveying a deep sense of harmony between the human form and nature. The composition is luminous and pure, defined by subtly balanced color palettes that are characteristic of her artistic style. Master painter Huang Chun-pi once noted, “Professor Yuan excelled in the use of color. She handled tonal gradations and light with natural ease, applying touches of pigment freely. Her works brim with vitality and come vividly alive, marked by a rare freshness and refinement.”
